Revived Spirit Organization Approved as Club in Student Government Meeting
BY STEVEN TUTHILL
Student Government Association senators voted in favor of granting club status to the spirit organization Blue Crew during the most recent SGA meeting. A previous version of Blue Crew folded a few years ago, but a trio of sophomores – Michael Cermak, Lydia Creech and Cristian Hurtado – have been working to revive it. After drafting a new constitution earlier in the semester, they saw their group gain club status on Tuesday.
“I think it was important to revive Blue Crew, because school spirit has really been lacking,” Creech said. “Students tend to not attend many events on campus, and I think that if a group of students start leading a change in the culture of campus spirit, then there really isn’t anything negative that can come from that.”
Because the semester is already halfway complete, Creech, Cermak and Hurtado have relatively simple goals for the club this spring.
“We are beginning this semester by attending a few select home games because we don’t want to take on too much to start with,” Creech said. “By next semester, we hope to be attending every home game and bringing the WestMO spirit with us.”

Cermak said that the club’s objectives are to attend and raise the spirit at various campus sporting events.
“Blue Crew will bring a moral boost to students in sporting activities,” he said. “It will get them to be more involved. They’re the inside group who will pump up spirit at the event.”
Thirteen students attended Blue Crew’s first meeting, which took place last Wednesday and was run by Hurtado. Hurtado said that the meeting consisted of discussion of plans for next semester and clarification of what the organization is.
He said he told those who attended that Blue Crew is a noncommittal “gateway” club intended to get students more involved on campus.

Creech described Blue Crew as “a group of students dedicated to the spirit of Westminster.”
“We’re a group of students who come together as one,” she said.
Cermak said that the club’s next meeting will be sometime in April and may include officer elections. However, because the positions would carry over into the fall, elections will be held early next semester, he said.
According to Creech, Blue Crew had 19 members as of Sunday.
