The Columns was the only news outlet on scene gathering the latest information from police.

A tan colored Ford Focus Station Wagon crashed into a school bus at the intersection of West 7th Street and Hickman Avenue around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16.

At the four-way intersection, there are only two stop signs — one facing north and the other facing south. After stopping at the stop sign, the school bus proceeded north, but the bus driver did not see the eastbound station wagon, according to Fulton Police Sergeant Joe Schramm. Neither the school bus nor the car had time to react to the situation, as there were no brake marks at the scene.

There were no children on the school bus, and the bus driver was not injured. The car’s airbags released, and its windshield was cracked. The driver and passenger of the Ford Focus were transported to Callaway County Hospital as a precautionary measure.

The school bus was scheduled to pick up children at McIntire Elementary. The elementary school was able to find another bus to transport the children home from school.

However, some students were delayed in being picked up by their parents, as police blocked off West 7th Street from Westminster Avenue down to the scene of the crash while crews assessed and cleaned up the damage.

Parents on Westminster Avenue were in a panic as they were trying to find an alternative route to pick up their children at McIntire Elementary.

“How am I supposed to pick up my kid at McIntire?” one parent shouted to police.

Crews remained on scene cleaning up the damage until around 4:30 p.m. The Ford Focus was towed by Tom and Steve’s Towing.

When asked what is going to be done to prevent future accidents from happening at this spot, such as putting two additional stop signs at the intersection, Schramm said Fulton Police will send a report to the Missouri Department of Transportation. It is then MoDOT’s decision whether or not it will change anything at the intersection of West 7th Street and Hickman Avenue.
