Softball Sweeps Stephens College in Home Opening Series

The Westminster softball team swept Stephens College on Saturday, improving its record to 3-3.
The Lady Blue Jays took Game 1 by a score of 4-2. Alyson Hanh, ‘17, was credited with the win, pitching a complete game while striking out six. Erica Burney, ‘17, went 3-3 with a home run and two RBI, and Brittany Hodge, ‘17, went 1-3 with an RBI.
In a game that didn’t see much offense, it was important for the Blue Jays to stay mentally tough and limit mistakes.
“We really focused on staying in the moment and taking the series one game at a time,” Kat Cooper, ‘18, said. “We didn’t try to do too much at the plate, and we got a great pitching performance from Erica.”
In Game 2, Westminster got a two-hit shutout from pitcher Shannon Perrigo, ‘16, en route to a 3-0 win. Caty Barrett, ‘18, and Amber Tepen, ‘18, each went 2-3, and Hodge went 1-3 with an RBI.
While it was a good weekend for the team, Tepen recognizes that the team must stay focused.
“We have to continue playing as a team and also playing for each other,” she said. “Each player has a role, and continuing to understand and fulfill that role is crucial to having success.”
The Blue Jays’ next series is scheduled for March 13, at home against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
