The Westminster women’s basketball team extended their overall record to 10-4 (6-2 in conference) this past week after posting two big wins against conference foes Webster University and MacMurray College.
The Lady Blue Jays beat Webster 68-58 on Jan. 13 and defeated MacMurray 81-54 on Jan. 16.
Andrea Zalis, ’17, led the team in scoring against Webster, pouring in 17, while Kasey Gatson, ’16, had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals. The Lady Blue Jays shot 51 percent from the field and outrebounded Webster 38-29.
It was a big win against a conference rival for Westminster.
“Webster’s gym is always a fun atmosphere, and we came out with good energy, which helped us throughout the game,” Zalis said. “Every win is a good win for our team.”
Against MacMurray, Gatson led all scorers with 19 points and tallied 8 assists, while Zalis added 18 points and 7 rebounds. The Lady Blue Jays capitalized on MacMurray’s mistakes, scoring 32 points off of 21 turnovers. They also outrebounded the Lady Highlanders 46-26, scoring 48 points in the paint.
“We knew we needed to come out strong at the beginning of the game,” Mackenzie Haddox, ‘16, said. “Every player was focused, and the energy we had allowed us to effectively execute our game plan early on.”
Women’s basketball goes on the road to play Principia College on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
