MLB Has Exciting First Two Weeks
BY JACOB HOLTGRAEWE
The New York Mets, the Houston Astros, and the Chicago Cubs have surprised many baseball fans in the excitement of the season’s first two weeks.
In a season of 162 games that stretch over a span of six months, baseball can sometimes reach a point of exhaustion, and maybe even boredom. With that said, these first two weeks of the season are nowhere near that. With an exciting offseason of ridiculous, unforeseen trades, and big signings, the regular season continued the excitement. From day one of the season there has been an excessive amount of big hits and web gem plays.
Like many other sports, oftentimes the top teams in the league remain so for many years, while the struggling teams become accustomed to finishing toward the bottom of their divisions. This year has proven to be different in that aspect for some teams in the league, up to this point. Three teams that have surprised baseball and risen from the bottom thus far are the New York Mets, the Houston Astros, and the Chicago Cubs.
Last year the Mets finished with a record of 79-83 and 3 place in the National League East. The last time the Mets have been in the postseason was back in 2006, when they lost to the Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. The Mets currently have the best record in baseball at 13-3. Zach Backes, ’16, commented: “It’s impressive. They have had quite a start to the season and it will be interesting to see if they can keep it up the rest of the season.”
The acquisition of Michael Cuddyer and a young pitching staff have set the Mets up for a promising season. “It’s a roster without a lot of big names, so they have really embraced the mentality of playing as a team,” said Jake Matthews, ’16. He added: “You can see it already as they’ve won their last 11 and went 10-0 in the home stand. They are my dark horse in the National League to make it to the playoffs this year.”
The Houston Astros have struggled tremendously in recent years. Last year they finished 70-92, and in 4 place in the American League West. This year, however, they seem like a different team. In the offseason they acquired Evan Gattis, Colby Rasmus, and Jed Lowrie. To start the season they currently lead the American League West with a record of 8-7.
The Chicago Cubs have had a lot of hype coming into this season. With the number one farm system in baseball, their future appears to be much brighter than their past. Now on their 107 consecutive year without a World Series win, the city and their fans are hoping for change. Last year, the Cubs finished last in the National League Central with a record of 73-89. Currently, the Cubs hold the second spot in the division with a record of 8-7.
This season has already shown itself as one of excitement and change. Only time will tell what the rest of the season holds for the reigning leaders and the ones hopeful for change in attempts to claim their moment at the top.
